What UWM's 2026 Top 30 Film School Ranking Actually Means

MovieMaker published “The 30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada, 2026” on August 24, 2026, and updated it on August 25. Despite the headline, the article contains 32 schools because ties expanded the selection. The schools are presented alphabetically, without scores or numbered placements.[1]

Evidence label: UWM received genuine recognition from a film-industry publication, but this is an unranked, curated selection. It does not mean that the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee placed 30th—or any other numbered position.

UWM’s own announcement accurately says that its Film Department was recognized among the top 30 film schools in North America.[2] That is useful shorthand for the honor, provided applicants do not turn “among” into a numerical rank that MovieMaker never assigned.

What MovieMaker recognized at UWM

The reasons behind UWM’s inclusion are more informative than an invented placement. MovieMaker highlights senior-project courses that take students through the full process of making a short film. It describes UWM as “a rising force in animation,” points to faculty member Owen Klatte’s credits on The Nightmare Before Christmas and Anomalisa, and notes the department’s working relationship with Milwaukee Film and the Milwaukee Film Festival.[1]

Those details give a prospective student productive questions to pursue. What kinds of films emerge from the senior-project sequence? Which animation techniques can students study? How frequently do students interact with Milwaukee’s film community? Which faculty members are likely to teach the courses an applicant wants? The official Film, Video, Animation & New Genres department page is the appropriate place to examine the current degrees, curriculum, people, facilities, and program contacts.[3]

MovieMaker also supplies the necessary limit on its own recognition: “not every school in our list of the Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada will be the right choice for everyone.”[1] The list can identify a program worth researching. It cannot establish whether UWM fits a particular student’s creative direction, budget, application record, or computer setup.

The application is a two-part process

An applicant must distinguish university admission from the requirements administered by the Peck School of the Arts. The operative flow is:

This distinction matters because an applicant can finish the university form while still having unanswered program-level tasks. MovieMaker’s list does not describe those tasks, assess a portfolio, waive creative requirements, or change the deadline calendar.

Dates for the Fall 2027 cycle

For Fall 2027 undergraduate entry, UWM’s published schedule begins well before the final closing date. The dates below should be treated according to what each one controls, rather than collapsed into a single “application deadline.”

The November priority date deserves more attention than the much later application close. Waiting until the closing date may preserve the ability to apply, but it does not recreate an earlier scholarship-priority opportunity. Likewise, January 31 is identified as a Peck undergraduate scholarship priority date, while January 15 is graduate information; high school and transfer applicants should not mistakenly plan around the graduate deadline.

Dates can change, and transfer instructions may differ from freshman instructions. Before submission, applicants should reopen both official pages, confirm that they are viewing the correct entry term and applicant type, and record the requirements shown there. A saved ranking announcement is not a substitute for the live application pages.

Do not guess about creative materials

The unranked list supplies no evidence about portfolio expectations or how program materials are evaluated. Applicants should use the current Peck instructions for their intended degree and entry route, noting each requested item, accepted format, submission location, and deadline. If the instructions are ambiguous, the program contact listed by UWM is a better authority than a third-party ranking or an older applicant discussion.

High school applicants who are also managing a testing calendar can keep that work separate with the SAT exam prep guide. UWM’s current freshman requirements—not the MovieMaker recognition—must control any decision about whether and how scores factor into an application.

The laptop requirement is part of the fit calculation

For Film, Video, Animation & New Genres BA and BFA students, “program fit” includes the machine on which the work will be completed. UWM’s department materials identify Adobe Premiere, Audition, and After Effects in the required software environment. They also state that Chromebooks unable to run Windows or macOS do not meet the laptop requirement.[3]

• Confirm that the laptop’s operating system is compatible; a device being relatively new does not by itself establish compatibility.
• Check the current hardware specifications against the department page rather than assuming that launching one Adobe application means the computer can handle the full workflow.
• Budget for the required computer and software alongside tuition, fees, housing, transportation, and production expenses.
• Ask the department what facilities, loaner equipment, or labs are currently available if the personal-computer requirement presents a problem.

This is the kind of requirement a reputation headline cannot surface. A student may be excited by the animation faculty and senior-film pipeline yet still need to replace an incompatible Chromebook before beginning coursework. That consequence belongs in the application budget, not in an after-enrollment surprise.

Recognition does not determine the aid offer

UWM says Chancellor’s Merit Scholarships can reach $6,000, are awarded automatically based on unweighted GPA, and can be renewed for up to four years. Its admissions materials also report that 80% of UWM students receive financial aid and place total enrollment at 23,104 students.[6] These figures identify possibilities to investigate; they do not predict an individual award.

MovieMaker’s recognition does not alter a student’s admission odds, scholarship eligibility, calculated financial need, or final net price. Families should work from UWM’s current cost information and the student’s actual aid offer, while separately accounting for the film program’s technology and production needs. A published percentage of students receiving aid also says nothing about how much a particular applicant will receive.

Use the badge as a research signal

UWM’s 2026 recognition supports putting the program on a film student’s research list. MovieMaker identified substantive features: a senior-project pipeline, animation strength, faculty with notable production credits, and a connection to Milwaukee’s film community. What it did not provide was a numbered national placement or an applicant-specific judgment.

The decision therefore returns to two official-source checks. First, verify the general UWM admission route and dates for the correct applicant type. Second, verify the Peck School’s current program, creative-material, scholarship, and equipment requirements. Those pages govern whether a student can complete the application and prepare for the program; the top-30 badge does not.
