If your phone says “Severe Thunderstorm Watch,” the weather has your attention. If it says “Severe Thunderstorm Warning,” it should have your movement. That is the plain difference: a watch means get ready because severe storms are possible; a warning means act now because severe weather is happening or is about to happen where you are.
The National Weather Service uses the same practical split: “Be Prepared” for a watch and “Take Action” for a warning. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued by the Storm Prediction Center, often several hours ahead, for a broad area where conditions are favorable. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued by a local NWS office for a smaller area when a severe storm is occurring or imminent.[1]

The Difference Is Not Just Wording
A watch is an early heads-up. It is the alert that should make you check the radar, charge the phone, bring loose items inside, decide where you would shelter, and avoid starting a trip that could put you on the road when storms arrive. The Storm Prediction Center commonly issues severe thunderstorm watches about 4 to 8 hours before severe weather develops, and the area can cover many counties or parts of several states.[1]
A warning is different because the decision window has narrowed. The local NWS office is no longer saying the ingredients are present; it is saying a severe storm is happening or expected very soon in a more specific area. Severe thunderstorm warnings are typically issued for shorter lead times, often around 30 to 60 minutes, because they track an active storm rather than a broad setup.[1]
The alert tells you how much time you probably have and how specific the threat has become. A watch is the moment to get ready before the parking lot, playground, job site, or highway becomes a bad place to be. A warning is the moment to stop treating preparation as optional.
What Counts as a Severe Thunderstorm
Not every loud thunderstorm is “severe” by NWS criteria. For a thunderstorm to meet the severe threshold, it needs hail at least 1 inch in diameter, winds of at least 58 mph, or both. One inch is roughly quarter-sized hail.[2]
Lightning is dangerous, but it is not one of the official severe thunderstorm warning criteria. That surprises people because lightning is often the part of the storm they see and hear first. The warning category is built around wind and hail thresholds, not the mere presence of lightning.[2]

This is where many people get stuck. They may hear about a Severe Thunderstorm Warning on TV, see one in a weather app, and wonder why their phone did not blast a Wireless Emergency Alert. The answer is usually not that the alert failed. Since 2021, the NWS has used damage-threat tags for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, and those tags help determine which warnings trigger Wireless Emergency Alerts.[4]

The categories are not decoration. They separate a warning that meets the minimum severe threshold from a warning expected to cause greater damage. The Destructive tier is the one that automatically activates a Wireless Emergency Alert on compatible phones.[4]

That distinction matters in real life. A Base warning is still a warning; it means take shelter from severe wind or hail. But a Destructive warning is the system’s way of saying the expected damage is high enough that the alert should interrupt people more aggressively. If the phone screams, the point is not to admire the wording. Get away from windows, move inside a sturdy building, and wait out the warned storm.
Where Watches and Warnings Fit With Advisories
The NWS alert vocabulary also includes advisories. In the broader hierarchy, a watch means conditions are favorable, a warning means hazardous weather is occurring or imminent, and an advisory is used for less severe but still inconvenient or hazardous conditions.[5]
For severe thunderstorms, the watch-warning split is the one that changes behavior fastest. A watch is not permission to ignore the sky until something happens. A warning is not a stronger version of “maybe.” It is the point where the forecast has become a location-specific safety instruction.
A Quick Reality Check on How Common These Alerts Are
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are not rare background noise. Weather.com reported that there were more than 21,000 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in 2024, compared with 3,635 Tornado Warnings, citing Iowa Environmental Mesonet data. The same article reported 36 thunderstorm-wind deaths in 2023, exceeding lightning fatalities that year, while tracing the fatality figure to NWS hazard statistics.[6]
Those numbers should be treated as a useful secondary-source snapshot rather than the final archive. Still, the basic safety point does not depend on squeezing too much from the figures: severe thunderstorm warnings happen often, and thunderstorm wind can kill.
What to Do When You See Each Alert
When a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued, use the lead time. Bring children and pets closer to shelter. Secure outdoor objects. Check whether your weather alerts are enabled. If you are about to drive, look at the timing and route before you leave. If you supervise a crew, event, classroom, or practice, decide who has the authority to pause activity before the storm is on top of you.
When a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued for your area, move indoors. A sturdy building is better than a vehicle; an interior room is better than a room with windows. If you are already driving and cannot get to a safe building, slow down, avoid flooded roads, and do not stop under trees or power lines. Large hail and severe wind are exactly the hazards the warning is built around.
